Woven Welcome

The Nemeth Art Center is excited to be kicking off Woven Welcome: Governor’s Fishing Opener! This spring, the Art Center will be helping members of the Park Rapids community weave a giant welcome mat, by hand, to be displayed at the Governor’s Fishing Opener in May. Participants will weave small sections, which will then be put together by artists Jill Odegaard, Sandy Sampson, and Anne Greenwood. The mat will cover part of a block of Main Avenue, and will be a unique and impressive representation of what makes Park Rapids so special.

Come weave a section with us on Saturday, February 16 at the Park Rapids Public Library. We’ll be there from 10:30am-1:00pm. All materials and tools will be provided. All ages and ability levels can participate in this event.

Celebrate our members with us this Friday

December 14, 8-10pm at The Good Life Cafe

Come celebrate the holidays, the end of another great year, and the creativity of our members this Friday evening at The Good Life Cafe in downtown Park Rapids.

In addition to great art, dessert, and drinks, we’ll have an auction and raffle featuring artwork from the show and other special items, including:

An Evening of Cooking with Amy Thielen: Join James Beard Award winning chef and author Amy Thielen for an evening of Asian barbeque. You’ll learn how to make Korean beef Bul-go-ki and lacquered stuffed chicken wings and then enjoy the fruits of your labor with Amy and the other guests. This is a truly unique and delicious opportunity.

Other auction items include a photographic portrait session with Steve Peterson, a custom poem by LouAnn Muhm, and a drawn portrait by our director Meredith Lynn.

We hope to see you this Friday, December 14, 8-10pm at The Good Life Cafe at 220 Main Ave S, Park Rapids.

MAEP Satellite Show at the NAC

The Nemeth Art Center is very excited to announce a new partnership with the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. In the spring and summer of 2013, the NAC will host a satellite show of the Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program of the MIA. St. Paul-based artist Allen Brewer will travel to Park Rapids several times over the course of the summer, creating new works inspired by the Gabor and Edith Nemeth Study Collection. This project will utilize local participation and encourage the Park Rapids community to see the Study Collection in a new way. We can’t wait to see the exciting work that will surely come from this collaboration.

Brian Stieler, Senior Preparator at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, has graciously donated his time and expertise in building a safe storage solution for our paintings during our off-season (October-April). Midwest Multiples!

For the first time ever, the Nemeth Art Center is hosting a juried art show! Prints, artists books, and other art made in multiples has been selected by our jurors over the past two months. Come see new artwork by artists from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Join us for the opening reception August 4, 5-7pm.

For this show we’re doing a couple new, cool things. First a Print Sale. Artists who are participating in the show have also sent along some of their prints to be sold during the exhibition. If you’ve ever walked through a museum and thought, “I love that. I wish I could have it”, now is your chance. These prints will represent a wide range of prices, styles, and techniques, and there will be something for everyone.

Also, a bookbinding workshop co-hosted by Beagle Books. On August 11, Elizabeth Stone (one of the artists represented in Midwest Multiples) and Meredith Lynn (the director of the NAC and the founder of Rust Belt Bindery), will teach participants the techniques to make three different book structures. The $12 registration fee covers the tools and materials necessary to create these books, and participants will be able to bring these tools home and create their own journals, photo albums, and other books. Help Us Keep Our Paintings Safe

The Nemeth Art Center has a permanent collection of 42 European paintings dating to the 15th Century. These works comprise the Gabor and Edith Nemeth Study Collection. In our off-season months and while particular paintings are not being exhibited, they are stored in our in-house storage room. Currently, the storage room is woefully inadequate. We are asking our supporters to help us build a new storage unit. Brian Stieler, head proprietor at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, has donated his time and expertise to design and construct a custom system just for our paintings. Please help us acquire the materials necessary to make this happen by contributing to our indiegogo campaign. In addition to helping out a great cause, we’ve thrown in a few perks to sweeten the deal. All of your donation will be spent on this particular project, which will help ensure the long term health of this unique and priceless collection.

“Nothing Touched Can Die”

The Nemeth Art Center is excited to announce the opening of our July show, “Nothing Touched Can Die: New Paintings by Danielle Kimzey and Mary Laube“. Please join us for an artist talk followed by the reception on Saturday July 7, 4pm.

In addition, Danielle Kimzey will be teaching a free drawing and painting workshop on Saturday July 7 at 10am. The two-hour workshop will focus on finding inspiration and reinterpreting it to create something original. Bring your favorite media (photographers welcome) and meet us at the NAC at 10am to participate.

Photo Composition – 10+ Design Techniques for Better Photographs

Bring your point & shoot or pro camera to this free hands-on, interactive learning session in the Great Gallery of the Nemeth Art Center. Participants will be given an opportunity to select a technique and practice it during the session.

Composition methods that will be discussed include: Rule of Thirds, Balancing Elements, Leading Lines, Symmetry and Patterns, Viewpoint, Background, Depth, Framing, Cropping, and Experimentation. There will also be time for Q&A.
